Research for your writing can be a tiring, grueling, time-
sucking mess. Sometimes the research takes far longer than
the actual writing!

For this reason, it’s a very good idea to do as much of
the research you need to do BEFORE you start writing,
instead of waiting until you’re in midstream with your
project like most people.

I know it can be frustrating having to take the time to
do a lot of research upfront. You want to dive right into
writing, and that’s understandable. But believe me, it is
much easier to gather the majority of your research before
you begin, so that you don’t have to interrupt your train
of thought midstream to do your research.

You may have times when you didn’t anticipate a specific
research need, in which case you’ll have to take the time
in the middle of writing, but if you gather most of your
research before you begin you will save yourself a lot
of time.

One great tip for research is to find a roundup article
that combines a lot of links to various sources on the
same topic so you have plenty of research at a glance.

This can save you a great deal of time, because it can
really waste time when you’re having to search for links
individually.

Be sure you take notes as you do your research, because
you don’t want to have to keep going back to your initial
research documents because you forgot something.

Fiction writer? Don’t think that because you’re writing
fiction you won’t need any research. Most types of
fiction still need some research to be accurate.

For example, historical fiction must be accurate with
regards to speech, attire, technology, etc. You must
ensure you are using correct terminology and writing
correctly for your time period.

Trust me, reviewers will rip you to shreds if you use
the wrong terminology, get a date wrong, or describe
something incorrectly!

Research is vital, and the more you do before you begin,
the faster you’ll be able to write, because you won’t
be constantly interrupting your train of thought to
look things up.

Tomorrow we’re going to take a look at some powerful
outlining techniques that can make writing even faster,
so be sure to look for it!

Until then,

PS- Think you work better without an outline? You’re
wrong! Once you get used to using them, outlines can
dramatically increase your writing speed and output!
