Typing speed is something most of us haven’t worried about
since computer class in school, but it’s a vital component
of learning to write faster, because ultimately nothing
else you do is going to matter until you’re able to get the
words onto the page as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Not only is it important to improve your overall typing
speed, but also your accuracy. Stopping every word or two
to make corrections can be jarring to the thought process,
and can severely hamper your efforts.

Technically, it’s recommended that when you’re writing you
do NOT stop to make corrections, instead making them during
the editing process once the first draft is finished, but if
you’re like me, you tend to self-edit as you go and it’s 
difficult to get away from that.

It WILL improve your writing speed if you can train yourself
to edit later, but until then, improving the accuracy of your
typing is key.

There are a lot of free typing tutor programs out there if you
just search Google for “typing tutor for adults” without the
quotes. What works for me might not work for you, so you 
should try a few to see which on you prefer. Just try to 
find one that you find fun, because you’ll be a lot more
likely to stick with it.

The average person can only type about 40 words per minute, 
but with practice you can type up to 65-75 words per minute,
which will almost double the average output! Some can learn
to type even faster!

Please don’t think that worrying about your typing speed 
isn’t going to make enough of a difference to matter. Trust
me, it matters a lot. If you improve your typing speed, you
WILL see an increase in your writing output!

Be sure to practice every day so you don’t get rusty!
