We all face distractions in life. Every day we are inundated
with more information than we can possibly handle. Some of
it is wanted information, like TV shows or silly internet
memes. Some is unwanted, like interruptions from family and
friends. But it all sucks time away from our productivity,
and that means less money coming in.

Distractions can be costlier than you think. It takes the
average person about fifteen minutes to return to full
concentration after being interrupted, and if you are
interrupted repeatedly during the day, it can cause a
dramatic drop in your productivity.

Learning to deal with those distractions is one of the most
important things you can do to improve your writing speed,
because you’ll eliminate those things that tend to
interrupt you and ruin your concentration, and you’ll be
able to keep full productivity a lot longer.

Family & Friends

The most common source of distractions for the average
work-at-home entrepreneur is from family and friends.
They seem to think that because you work at home, you can
be interrupted at any time without any real consequences.
After all, you are your own boss. You can’t fire yourself.

But it’s very important to let anyone who interrupts you
know that you care what they have to say, but they must
wait until you aren’t working to say it unless it’s a real
emergency.

Tell them that just because you work at home does not mean
you can deal with interruptions. They must wait until you
are “off work”, just like they would if you had a
traditional job.

If they just refuse to listen to you, find someplace where
you can work interrupted, even if it’s just a closet or
bathroom.

Failing that, you can try wearing headphones to keep some
of the interruptions at a minimum. People will have to make
a conscious effort to interrupt you, which will help keep
them mindful of the need to leave you alone while you work.

Entertainment

Sources of entertainment are all around us these days. It’s
all to easy to fall into the trap of playing “just one more
round” of Candy Crush or watching “just one more episode” on
Netflix. The next thing you know, your whole day is gone.

This is where discipline must come into play.

If you find it hard to discipline yourself to stay away from
such distractions, try using a timer. Set a timer of around
ten to thirty minutes and promise yourself you can have time
for whatever you want as soon as you finish working. When
the timer goes off, it’s your choice to either keep working
for another round or take some time to have fun.

Email

Email is a huge time suck for a lot of people. Unless you’re
expecting a very important email, make the commitment to
check it only twice per day—once in the morning, and once
at the end of the day. That’s all you need. Really!

Other

There will always be other things that step in to distract
you. Knocks at the door, phone calls, text messages, pets,
package deliveries, and a million other things.

If you’re serious about writing, you’ll start eliminating
or reducing these distractions as much as possible. And if
necessary, you might consider renting an office space
where you can have privacy and avoid as many of these
interruptions as you can.

In tomorrow’s lesson, we are going to take a look at how
you can learn to type faster, so don’t miss it!

Until then,

PS- Think you already type pretty fast? Maybe so, but you
can always improve!
