Subject: Before You Launch a Scope

On Periscope, live broadcasts are known as scopes. A scope is basically just a live stream you broadcast from whatever device youre using, such as your phone or tablet.

You probably wont want to jump right into broadcasting, because youll probably find out theres a lot of dead air. Youll probably um and uh your way through it, because you wont have any idea what youre doing. At least, not at first.

For this reason, its a good idea to do a little bit of planning before you begin. I wouldnt script everything from start to finish, because that could lead to a presentation that is stiff or unnatural. Instead, just create a very basic outline so you know before you begin what youre going to be talking about.

Next, you need to figure out where youre going to hold your scope. It needs to be in an area with good lighting, as well as a place where you wont be disturbed too much, and there wont be too many interruptions.

Additionally, its important to be certain the environment around you is clean and free of clutter that might look unprofessional. You may be using both the forward and rear-facing cameras on your device, so youll want to be certain both views are acceptable for appearing on camera.

You will also want to be certain you remember to give you elevator pitch, which is basically an introduction for people who dont know you. When you first get started, this is especially important, because almost no one will know you!

Your elevator pitch should be something short and to-the-point. It should be professional, but engaging.

Heres an example:

You can introduce yourself with your elevator pitch before you begin your broadcast, once in the middle (just say, For those of you just tuning in recently and continue with your elevator pitch) and once at the end when you sign off. This will help people get to know you, and it will hopefully get people to visit your site and take action!

In our next lesson, were going to look at how to create a Periscope broadcast, and what you should do during the broadcast to make the most of the time youre on the air. Be sure to look for it in your inbox soon!
